Build a nice killboard first - get a nice base of kills with RvB, get a few dozen kills in FW and if necessary join some renter/pet to prop up the last few pages of your kills/losses with some 0.0 experience.
Train for at least one specialized ship class - Logistics, Interdictors/Heavy Interdictors, Stealthbombers, Recons/BlackOps, capital ships, ... Be ready to invest a month or two and train the related skills at least to level 4, better to level 5 - try to get as much hands-on experience if possible even if that may be hard.
Above 2 points are technicalities that have nothing to do with your "player skill" but that will help you a lot to get into desirable corps.
Don't make the mistake to think that being a member of a renter alliance will give you the opportunity to polish your killboard and get some experience in 0.0 PvP. Most renters only care about ISK - they will avoid pvp at every occasion and if they have FCs you usually won't learn anything from these. If you end up in a renter/pet try to join fleets of your landlord/host asap and start to work your way into a corp in the landlord alliance.
Stuff I would look for in a corporation (in no particular order): - timezone - availability of ship replacement programs (often hard to judge from the outside - but if your losses get replaced in ISK once every month you will need a much larger stock of ships than if you get a direct ship-replacement after each op) - ease of logistics. How many carrier/jumpfreighter jumps from high-sec? can you realistically bring in small stuff using a cloaky transport? Can you make use of a jumpbridge network? - taxes/fees (personally, I prefer monthly fees over high taxes) - killboard (draw conclusions from the location of kills/losses, look at fittings in lossmails, if alliance killboard - which corps do the heavy lifting and which ones get their Hulks and haulers killed? - quality of FCs, any specializations? e.g. FC <xyz> might be really good at running AHAC gangs or stealthbombers or BlackOps hotdrops or ... - if pet - how well it is embedded in its host/ally alliance? Shared intel channels? shared comms? usage of jumpbridge networks? how often do you see members of the pet corp/alliance get kills in fleets of the host alliance? - forum record/posting history of prominent corp/alliance members
